Through funding from American Cancer Society and Hope foundation, a multinational consortium is being established at UTHSA to describe the epidemiology and outcomes associated with post-transplant complications (e.g. viral infection, pneumonia, bronchiolitis obliterans, mortality).

So far, we have collected 260 cases and expect to have 1400 cases by the end of 2019 – leading to the largest ever study in this population. We aim to leverage this framework to conduct multiple collaborative studies in hematologic malignancy and hematopoietic transplant survivors. We are also collaborating with UTHSA faculty members on cutting-edge precision population health studies on Liver cancer, Prostate cancer, Kidney cancer, and Breast cancer. Completion of these inter-programmatic pilot studies will help us move this research from bench to clinic to population. We have also initiated collaborative studies with multiple investigators at Methodist, Baylor College of Medicine, Texas A&M University, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and UT School of Public Health.

All of these studies have an underlying theme of innovative precision oncology and precision population science by using big data and cutting-edge translational studies. In addition to research activity, epidemiology faculty serve as Advisory Council Member for Texas Cancer Registry; Member of Cancer Alliance of Texas; Member of Shared Resources Oversight Committee; Founding Member of Respiratory Viral Infection Consortium; and Member of Hepatocellular Carcinoma Epidemiology Consortium.”
