Director of Medical Informatics

Candidates are invited to apply for this faculty position in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A tenured/tenure-track or non-tenure research track position is available at the rank of assistant/associate/full professor level.

SUMMARY

This position of Director of Medical Informatics with a primary appointment in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) School of Medicine, will have overall responsibility for strengthening our medical informatics capacity, developing an extramurally funded research program and overseeing the establishment of a biomedical informatics teaching program. A joint appointment in a clinical department is encouraged. The candidate will work with the leadership of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the leadership of the Institute for Integration of Medicine and Science (IIMS) and other University components to define a strategy to develop our medical informatics research and training programs, and to work closely with operational IT leadership on infrastructure development. The candidate will also serve in a leadership role for our Biomedical Informatics Key Function Core for the IIMS, the academic home of our NIH Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA). The Director of Medical Informatics will promote the development and conduct of interdisciplinary informatics research in translational, clinical and community settings. The Director of Medical Informatics will provide oversight and guidance to faculty and master's level biomedical informatics staff, information technology staff and administrative support staff. This person will be provided with institutional resources to develop a very active program in academic medical informatics, including the recruitment of additional faculty.

DUTIES

Performs a combination of, but not necessarily all, of the following duties:

  1. Take a lead role in designing an enterprise information architecture leading to an Integrated Data Repository (IDR) to facilitate translational research through all sectors of the medical center: clinical care, operations, education, and research
  2. Establish an active line of extramurally-funded research
  3. Publish in peer-reviewed journals and participate in national conferences and scientific societies
  4. Pursue the development or adoption of new informatics technologies in areas such as clinical/translational research, informatics-related ontologies, data mining, grid computing, and medical image analysis
  5. Serve as a member of both medical informatics and bioinformatics teams, and coordinate the deployment of each team’s resources to best meet the needs of specific research projects
  6. Establish medical informatics collaborations locally within UTHSCSA and its partner organizations, as well as with Texas and national CTSA consortium members
  7. Participate in program planning and management and provide consultation to informatics-related collaborative research programs and proposals
  8. Work closely with researchers to develop viable informatics and analysis strategies that lead to new solutions or leverage existing assets
  9. Develop and teach medical informatics courses at the master’s and doctoral level
  10. Engage in university, professional and community service activities

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

Candidates must have a MD with a graduate degree (Master’s Degree or PhD) in Medical Informatics, or in a very closely related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with an MD and a graduate degree in Medical Informatics.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Candidates must have a minimum of three years of clinical and translational research informatics experience in an academic setting. This must include publication experience in the peer-reviewed medical informatics literature. A successful candidate will have strong training in research methods with substantial professional experience in biomedical informatics, public health informatics or the planning, implementation and management of clinical and administrative health information systems. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in obtaining extramural research funding in the medical informatics area. Candidates must possess excellent communication skills and academic leadership potential.

Biostatistics Faculty Positions

The San Antonio Cancer Institute and the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio seek to fill two biostatistics faculty positions. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. These positions require a Ph.D. or Dr.P.H. in Biostatistics or Statistics, or in a related health science discipline. Successful candidates are expected to have outstanding collaborative scientific research experience, to have strong statistical methodological as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. These positions require 3 or more years of post-doctoral experience in biostatistics—a strong clinical trials or cancer research background is desirable. The candidates will be expected to help expand the extramural research base of the San Antonio Cancer Institute (a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center with current funding of $60.1 million) as well as further the academic mission of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Medicine.

Currently, the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics has doctoral-level faculty with strong collaborative ties to several large research programs such as the San Antonio Cancer Institute, the Children's Cancer Research Institute, and the Frederic C. Barter General Clinical Research Center. These programs span basic, translational, clinical and population-based research.

Biostatistics Support Unit Director

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio seeks a Director for our new Biostatistics Support Unit (BSU). The BSU provides coordinated study design and statistical support for clinical and translational research within the university community and with partner organizations. The BSU Director supervises and assigns projects to BSU personnel; monitors project flow and deadlines; maintains contact with investigators to track project progress; tracks grant reviews and funding or publication status; and oversees the collection of web-based quality evaluations of services. This position requires a DrPH, a PhD in Biostatistics or Statistics, or a PhD in a related health science discipline. We strongly prefer 5 or more years of post-doctoral experience in a collaborative research environment. Successful candidates are expected to have outstanding collaborative scientific research experience, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills. RAHC Biostatistics Core Director

The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio seeks a Director for our new Biostatistics Unit that will be located in our Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) in Harlingen, Texas. The Biostatistics Unit will provide coordinated study design, statistical and clinical informatics support for clinical and translational researchers in our campuses located in Harlingen and Edinburg, Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. Assistant or Associate Professor - Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics,
Institute for Health Promotion Research (1 open position)

Description: The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio seeks a tenure-track assistant or associate professor within the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics’ Institute for Health Promotion Research. The successful candidate will conduct research, obtain extramural support, mentor students and fellows, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and contribute service to the university and community. Teaching is optional. Special populations of interest include Latinos, and communities that are underserved or challenged educationally or economically.

Qualifications: 1) a doctoral degree in public health, or in the social sciences, communication or behavioral sciences; 2) demonstrated success in obtaining extramural funding; 3) peer-reviewed publications; 4) ability to work in a multi-cultural environment. Preference will be given to candidates with fluency in English and Spanish and expertise in any of the following: community-based, behavioral interventions for the prevention and control of chronic diseases (cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity); health communication; policy research that targets population behavior; applied research; and health disparities.

Research Environment: The scholar will be located in Harlingen, Texas at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s recently-built Regional Academic Health Center. Compensation: Salary and rank will be commensurate with experience. The full-time position, which comes with a start-up package, includes 3 years of salary support plus research funds, and excellent fringe benefits.
